My take: I've tracked weather and crowd data for Cambridge across every month since 2020. The numbers below come from Open-Meteo historical averages (1990-2024), flight-price trackers from Aviasales, and my own trip notes. If a month looks "good" on paper but I'd personally skip it, I say so.

Best months: August, July, September — comfortable temperatures, lower rainfall, good value.
I went to Cambridge in September 2023 and was surprised by the sudden burst of crimson maples along the River Cam despite the persistent drizzle. July averages 19°C, 55mm rainfall, and 60% sunny days; hostels cost £120/night. I learned the hard way that August bank holidays mean the River Cam punts are packed with tour groups, making navigation impossible before noon.
