My take: I've tracked weather and crowd data for Rome across every month since 2020. The numbers below come from Open-Meteo historical averages (1990-2024), flight-price trackers from Aviasales, and my own trip notes. If a month looks "good" on paper but I'd personally skip it, I say so.
Italy · Real weather data · Updated April 2026
Best months: October, May, June — comfortable temperatures, lower rainfall, good value.
I went to Rome in May 2023 and was surprised by how calm the historic center felt; cafes overflowed with locals, not just tourists, while cherry blossoms dotted the Tiber. May averages 22°C, 58mm rain, and 72% sunny days, making it ideal. Avoid the €15 Colosseum add-on fee for the Forum unless you pre-book; most guides omit this hidden cost.

Season Guide
Peak Season Jun-Aug
Warmest weather, maximum crowds, highest prices. Book 3-4 months ahead. Best for beach destinations.
Shoulder Season Best value
April-May and September-October: 20-35% cheaper than peak, good weather, manageable crowds.
Low Season Nov-Mar
Cheapest flights and hotels. Fewer tourists at attractions. Cold weather — pack accordingly.
Our Pick
October, May, June: the sweet spot of comfortable weather, reasonable prices, and authentic atmosphere.
Flights from EU hubs: Jan–Feb cheapest (€30–60 Ryanair/easyJet), peak Jun–Aug (€80–150)
Best value sweet spot: Last 2 weeks of October or first 2 weeks of April — good weather, moderate prices, manageable crowds
Best Month for Each Activity
Outdoor dining & aperitivo: May–September (terraces open late, warm evenings)
Vatican without crowds: November–February (skip-the-line barely needed)
Beach day trips (Sperlonga, Santa Marinella): June–September (water above 22°C)
Walking tours & ruins: March–May, October (25°C or below, comfortable walking)
Photography: October — autumn golden-hour light on travertine buildings is unmatched
Shopping (sales): January 5 – mid-February (winter saldi) or July (summer saldi)
Events & Festivals Calendar
Carnevale (February) — less famous than Venice but lively street celebrations, especially on Via del Corso
Easter Week (March/April) — Papal mass at St. Peter's, Via Crucis at Colosseum (Good Friday), huge crowds but unforgettable atmosphere
Natale di Roma (April 21) — Rome's birthday: fireworks over Campidoglio, gladiator reenactments at Circo Massimo. Free events
Estate Romana (June–September) — summer festival with open-air cinema, concerts, and theatre at venues across the city. Most events €5–15
Festa de' Noantri (July, Trastevere) — neighborhood street festival with food stalls, processions, fireworks. Free, authentically Roman
Rome Film Festival (October, Auditorium Parco della Musica) — international premieres, red carpet. Tickets from €10
Christmas Markets (December) — Piazza Navona market (through Epiphany Jan 6), presepi (nativity scenes) in every church
What to Pack by Season
Spring (Mar–May): Layers — mornings 10°C, afternoons 22°C. Light jacket, one sweater, comfortable walking shoes (cobblestones destroy heels)
Summer (Jun–Aug): Lightweight, breathable fabrics. Sunscreen SPF50, hat, refillable water bottle (Rome's 2,500+ nasoni fountains have free drinkable water). Shoulders and knees must be covered for churches and Vatican
Autumn (Sep–Nov): Similar to spring, plus a compact umbrella from October. Evenings get cool by late October — a light scarf is useful
Winter (Dec–Feb): Warm coat, scarf, gloves for evenings. Indoor attractions mean you'll overheat in heavy down jackets. Rome rarely drops below 0°C but damp cold feels colder than the number suggests
